Freestyle Living 55+ Active Lifestyle Community

From a design prospective, this project was quite complex. The existing building, formerly Cape Cod Irish Village, was dated and dilapidated. More importantly, given its intended use as an active living facility for people over 55, it was a long way from code compliance. Of great significance in the planning, design, and building phases was the Town of Yarmouth’s desire to take advantage of relatively new Growth Incentive Zone bylaws that were enacted specifically to incentivize the large-scale renovation of aging motels along the Route 28 corridor. Our design reimagined and completely revised what was both a signature element of the hotel and a bit of an eyesore, the dramatic front entry façade. We imagine it was originally added to give the hotel’s entrance a sense of grandeur, but over the years, the effect was just the opposite. While its overall “bones” remain clearly recognizable, it now includes decidedly Cape Cod Shingle-style elements such as a cupola, multi-paned windows, a varied roofline, and, of course, cedar-shingle siding. It is a timeless look and adds a distinctly residential appearance to the large property. Inside is a mix of individual units in several different configurations and community spaces such as restaurants, and rooms for socializing and playing games.
